Fabric Softener
1/4 cup baking soda
1/2 cup vinegar

Fill washer with water, add baking soda, stir, then add clothes. Add vinegar to final rinse.

I put 1/4 cup white vinegar into the liquid fab softener dispenser cup on the washer. In the summer this is enough. When it becomes very cold & dry in the winter I need a bit more to control static. I buy Downy dryer sheets & cut each sheet into 10 strips. 1-2 of these strips is enough to keep a large load of towels, blankets, etc static-free.

Add one cup of undiluted white vinegar to the laundry rinse cycle instead of commercial fabric softener. White vinegar softens clothes and cuts detergent residue--a plus for family members with sensitive skin.
